Walk of Life – Day 21 – August 2020 – Thoughts from the Book of Proverbs
A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart. Proverbs 21: 2
Each of us think that we are doing the right thing. It is very normal and natural that we always feel that we are right. If someone tells that us that we did the wrong thing, we justify in every way possible and we do not want to accept that we were wrong. There is this ego, this self-righteousness that always says I am right, I have not done wrong.
God’s Word is so precious, look at the next part of the verse…but the Lord weighs the heart. I was thinking, how just the Lord’s weighing balance would be. He would take my heart, place it there and weigh it, truly wonder what the outcome would be. What would my Lord weigh? He would weigh my thoughts, my motives, my ideas, my goals, my aspirations, my emotions, my feelings, my innermost attitudes towards people, my judgments, the list goes on.
Psalm 139:2,3, and 4 says
“You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
3 You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
4 Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.”
This thought truly brings fear and dread. How casually we live our lives. The Lord weighs every single thought, every evil thought, every time you curse a brother or sister in your heart, every time you think something disdainful, He knows and He weighs. This reminds me of Daniel 5:4. The king Belshazzar was enjoying drunk with wine and praising the gods of gold, silver, and bronze. Suddenly a finger writes on the wall and a part of the message meant “Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.” The Lord had weighed the heart of Belshazzar. On one side, he placed His unchangeable, perfect, and just Law demanding full and complete obedience and on the other side he placed Belshazzar’s heart with years of forsaking the truth, pleasing himself, not an ounce of confession of repentance and no effort to do the right thing. Belshazzar faced the wrath of God.
We as children of God should allow the Lord to search our hearts and weigh our hearts on a daily basis so we are not found wanting. Here are six ways we can ask the Lord to weigh our hearts:
- By daily reading and meditating the Word of God – If you read the Word systematically, the Lord will reveal what is in His heart for you and you can correct where you have gone wrong.
- In His fellowship – Make it a habit to keep speaking to the Lord, sharing your heart’s burdens and He will take care that your foot does not slip
- In friendship with other believers – It is a good practice to spend time in prayer with like-minded believers and by praying for each other, the Lord will reveal His purposes.
- By studying the Word of God – It is not enough to read, but make Bible study a regular routine in your life. Digging deep into the Word of God will help the Lord reveal things that you have not known before.
- In praise and worship – When you praise and worship the Lord, His light will illuminate your heart and you will have a fresh revelation of the Lord. The more we know the Lord, the more we will realize how weak or empty we are.
- Serving others – We may speak about being servants for the Lord but if someone treats us like a servant, we immediately feel hurt. Your true humility and attitude of your heart is revealed when you serve the Lord and others.
May we allow the Lord to weigh our hearts and may we not be found wanting.
Prayer: Psalm 139:23, 24
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
