Walk of Life – Day 6 – November 2020 – Thoughts from the Book of Proverbs

When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. Proverbs 6:22

Today’s generation is quite averse to rules, laws, discipline, commandments, and the like. We often hear “I am my own master.” Can I not decide what I want to do. We no longer live in a society bound by rules but it is more a “free” society. Today as parents, we are quite lenient with our children. I remember as a small child, we would sit in the first or second row in church without moving, getting up, or walking out, without talking, or making any noise. Today, making the children attend meetings, forget meetings even family prayer, you will get comments like cant you make it more interesting or this is really long or boring. We never would have even dared to speak to our parents that way. Have we failed as a generation? Have we taught God’s Word to our children as we ought to? The Law of the Lord, the commandments, the Word of God, the instructions and guidelines set out in the Bible, do our children even know most of them?

We attended a Christian school and there was an American director who used to take Scripture classes for us. The Pilgrim’s Progress was part of our daily curriculum. These classes were for all, irrespective of religion and his love for the Word of God and the desire for scripture to dwell in the hearts of children is something that always amazed me. Truly those precious lessons from those early school days, from Sunday school, from Vacation Bible Schools are what played such an important role in our lives.

The need of the hour is that the Word of God should lead us on our journey, preserve us when we rest, and be our constant companion and guide when we are fighting life’s battles. Today’s world is very misleading. Everything is available at a click of a button, Google seems to have the answer to all questions, and the values that are being instilled are more of being arrogant, strong-willed, able to achieve anything, smart and invincible, such youth are considered to be the cream of society. Today if you say one must be meek as the Lord Jesus or kind and compassionate, you may be branded as someone who can be easily taken advantage of. Today the spirit is to be tough, to face people head-on even if it means being harsh or rude.

But NEVER undermine the Word of God. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The Word of God is forever. The laws and rules so beautifully explained by the Lord Jesus in Mathew 5,6, and 7 and throughout the Bible, are very relevant even today. Overcome evil with good, do to others as they wish them to do to you,  whatever measure you mete, it will be measured to you, or Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened unto you, these rules last the test of time. They work always, if you follow them sincerely.  Be a person who walks according to God’s Word. Today we are so busy with our mobiles that we hardly have time to spend at the Lord’s feet. How many of us honestly spend time with the Lord. I have heard that Bro. Bakht Singh would be on his knees the whole night or days together till he received a word from the Lord to preach. God’s word is eternal and always relevant even to today’s modern, fast-paced, technological world. It is these rules that should guide us, lead us, not just us but our children, our children’s children, and over many generations.

“God’s Word never changes but it changes us”

Do not neglect the Word of God. Do not carry out your duties without spending time with Him. Renowned preacher Smith Wigglesworth said “First read the Word of God. Second, consume the Word of God until it consumes you. Third, believe the Word of God and fourth, Act on the Word.”

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Joshua 1:8
