Walk of Life, Day 27 – April,2021- Thoughts from the Book of Proverbs. – Don’ts

DO NOT BOAST OF TOMORROW.

Proverbs 27:1 “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.”

Tomorrow, while it symbolizes hope to some people, it symbolizes worry for others. The verse warns us not to boast about tomorrow, in other words not to boast about future. Then what does the word of God expect us to do?

This verse reminds me of the rich man in Luke 12:13-20. The rich man in this context is seen storing food for many years to come. He thinks he has nothing to worry about tomorrow. He tells his soul to eat, drink and be merry. However, the same night, God says to him that his time on this earth has come to an end, he had to leave the very night. What happened to the well planned tomorrow of that rich man?

This verse also reminds me of a widow of Zarepath in 1 Kings 17:8-16. The poor widow had just a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. That was the time when the drought prevailed in the land. When the man of God, Elijah has asked her to feed him, she says that she decided to eat the last left morsel and die for the next day.

In the both contexts we see two different people who have planned their tomorrow. While one, that is, the rich man plans it to enjoy his life, the widow on the other hand, plans her tomorrow to be her death day.

The verse in proverbs 27:1 clearly tells us that we have no right to plan for your tomorrow as you do not know what is going to happen. The rich man who planned to enjoy his life, had no tomorrow, as he died the very night. The widow woman who planned to die the next day, lived long throughout the drought, once the man of God blessed her.

I happened to talk to a young lad, who is pursuing his degree. On asking what he wanted to do after graduation, the reply of that lad left me speechless. He said that he has planned everything in detail for his life till he attains the age of 70. This sounds exaggerating, but it is true. There are many who do not think planning or talking high about their tomorrow as a mistake.

What does the Word of God say? Are we expected to plan for our tomorrow ahead?

Sometimes when we have to go for a meeting, exam or any such thing, we plan. Apart from such things we also plan for our future, thinking what should be done at certain age. These plans often push us into anxiety and depressions.

A plan that estimates yourself higher or lower is against God. When we start to plan for the up coming days, it is like rejecting God’s plan and directing Him to act according to our plan. How foolish it is, is it not?

When a child of God realizes that god has got a perfect plan for him/her, they will never care about planning. Is it not true that God has got a special plan to fulfil His special purpose through you and me? The one who has planned your life, before the foundations of this world were laid, will He leave you clueless at any point of your life?

If you say that you are now standing at cross roads confused to choose the right path, it is because you have rejected God’s plan and chose your own at some point in your life.

Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.”

We are not expected to plan for our tomorrow, as it is already planned by our Master, the Lord Jesus Christ. We ought to be prepared to act according to His plan. Being prepared is to wait upon the Lord for His directions to follow. From now onwards let us stop worrying about tomorrow, or boasting by feeling confident on our own plans and depend on the Lord who is the master of every tomorrow. It is not by us that we wake up every morning, it is only His grace, long suffering nature and never-ending mercy that we are alive. Thank the Lord for each day and rejoice in Him alone.
