Walk of Life, Day 29, August, 2021- Thoughts from the Book of Proverbs. Right Attitude.
The right attitude to receive honor.
Proverbs 29:23 “A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit.”
The road to exaltation has no traces of pride, but filled with the foot prints of humility. The right attitude to receive honor is to bumble yourself.
How can we humble ourselves?
1 Corinthians 6:20 “For ye are bought with a price therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
This verse explains it all. Imagine you bought new pair of shoes. Would you not boldly tell your friends, and sometimes even brag of having the shoes of latest trend? If you have borrowed the same shoes from your friend on purpose, would you be doing the same that is, bragging about the latest shoes? You would just be hoping that no one asks you about them, so that you will have no need to tell them that they are borrowed. What brings the difference in the attitude of the person is the ‘ownership’.
When we realize the spiritual concept of ownership, we will humble ourselves automatically. The verse in 1 Corinthians 6:20 says that we do not own our body and our spirit. They belong to God. When nothing belongs to us, how can we boast about having those? How can we be proud of other person’s possessions?
Instead of boasting or being proud, we are deemed to be grateful for being given the opportunity to take care, nurture God’s possessions. Our body and our spirit are God’s assets, He hath made you and me the care takers of His assets. Now, when you realize this, you feel the great sense of responsibility.
How do we take up this responsibility?
One day a man of God was travelling to a place by train. There was a group of young boys travelling in the same coach in which the man of God was travelling. After travelling a certain distance, they decided to play a game of cards. They found that they required one more player to start the game. They looked here and there and found this young man of God. They went and asked him,” Would you like to join us for the game?” The man of God replied, “I would like to, but I cannot.” The young men were interested to know why he cannot join them. The answer of the man of God startled them. He said, “I do not have hands to play.” The young men could see that the man of God had two healthy hands, but he still denied of having them. Later, the man of God told them,” The hands which you can see are with me, but are not mine. They belong to God. He purchased my body and my spirit. So, without His permission I cannot use my body and my spirit as I like.”
How wonderful is his reply! Is it not? What are we doing with the Lord’s possessions entrusted to us? Let us examine. The right attitude of being humble comes only by submitting and acknowledging Lord’s ownership on our body and our spirit.
Amen.
