Walk Of Life – Day 15, May 2022 – Thoughts From The Words Of Christ

Jesus Casts Demons Into A Herd Of Pigs (Matthew 8: 28-33, Mark 5:1-20, Luke 8: 26-39)

Gadarenes named Kursi today was located on the eastern side of Golan Heights which was mostly a dry terrain containing of many tombs probably used as burial sites. The inhabitants of this place were mostly Gentiles as Jews considered this place terribly unclean because of graveyards.

This miracle is about how Christ drove out demons out of two men. Demons are none other than the fallen angels who had rebelled against the authority of the Most High and were driven out of Heaven as punishment, Lucifer known as Satan being their leader. Demonic possession happens when an evil spirit resides and controls a human body. The work of these demons are to destroy God’s plan of salvation for mankind. They work without ceasing and enter in a human through mediums such as superstition, fortunetelling, so-called harmless occult games and practices, spiritism, magic, drug taking etc till they take control and completely destroy the possessed body.

  • “When he(Jesus) arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.”  Matthew 8:28
These men were originally normal people living in the towns but eventually they became possessed by evil spirits. These demons were very violent and haunted the area for a very long time. They did not want Christ whom they knew to interfere in their area of work. So they went to meet him.
  • “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” Matthew 8:29
The demons knew He was Christ and were aware that they were about to get cast out. They knew their final destiny is everlasting suffering so they wanted to do as much damage before their time.
  • For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man.” Luke8:29
Possessed for a long time they wore no clothes and lived in unclean places like wild animals in tombs. They had become so violent that even iron chains could not bind them anymore. They were tormented and had become self-destructive crying and cutting themselves. Lord Jesus saw the damage done to these poor men and commanded the legion of demons to come out of them.
  • “The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”” Matthew 8:31
Now the demons knew they had to obey the Lord’s command. They did not want to be imprisoned in the abyss, which is the bottomless pit described in Revelation 9:11, so they fell on his knees and pleaded Lord Jesus to send them into the herd of pigs grazing in that area instead.
  • “He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.” Matthew 8:32
The destructive nature of the demons immediately came to effect and drove the pigs to madness making them jump off the cliff to their deaths.
  • Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.” Luke8:37
When the people heard what had happened they were not able to thank God for the miracle as they were worried about the great loss of property and money. That’s why Lord Jesus left and the people lost the change of experiencing God’s power in that region.
  • ““Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.” Luke8:39
When the men were healed they came to their senses and begged to become Lord Jesus’s disciples. But He asked them to testify about the healing to their family first and then to others. The men obeyed Lord’s command and became a blessing to many in that town.

Being under the fold of Christ, you are protected from such torment. But the evil one is able to mislead you with his lies, confuse and make you doubtful of God’s plan in your life. Therefore lets prayerfully be on our guard against Satan’s plan.
