The Lord’s Faithfulness and Righteousness
Psalm 36: 5, 6, 7:Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds. Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O Lord, thou preservest man and beast. How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.
In this psalm, David first enumerates the wickedness of man. He speaks about all his ways being evil and having no fear of God in him. After a brief description of how much man has fallen, he contrasts it with the greatness of God. It is beautiful how David describes each of the attributes of God. He compares it to the heavens, the clouds, the great mountains and the great deep. He speaks about four attributes, the Lord’s mercies, His faithfulness, His righteousness, and His judgement.
The Lord is merciful unlike man. His mercies reacheth unto the heavens. We do not deserve His great love but He sent His only begotten Son the Lord Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. We do not deserve His great love as we were yet sinners.
He is faithful. He says and He does it. He never goes back on His promises. Hold on to His promises. Man may fail but the Lord will never fail or forsake you.
Because He is faithful I can conquer every temptation – 1 Cor. 10:13: “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape, so that you are able to bear it. ”
Because He is faithful, He keeps up His side of the relationship even when I don’t. 2 Tim. 2:13: If we are faithless, He remains faithful – for He cannot deny Himself.
Because He is faithful, I can depend on Him, count on Him, and look for Him to come through for me in every circumstance. Sometimes, truths of the heart like this one are best captured in song. Listen to this song about the unfailing faithfulness of our God.
He is righteous. He does only what is right…that is very significant. No matter how confused things may seem, no matter how hopeless the situation may be, no matter what the world says, if your life is in the Lord’s hands and you have surrendered to His will, He will do only what is right for you. So trust Him wholeheartedly.
His judgements are also perfect. He is the righteous judge. The world may judge unrighteously but He is righteous and true. Not only are so many throughout the world oppressed by those with power and money, but in too many cases the “justice” system is anything but just.
Sadly, even those attempting to judge justly are limited by human fallibilities. Someone may seem guilty or not guilty based on appearances, but only God has perfect, righteous insight into exactly what happened and the motives of those involved. He is an all-knowing God and there is nothing hidden from Him. He knows the innermost motives and thoughts and hence will judge righteously.
Remember you serve a faithful, merciful, righteous and just God. He is in control of your life. He loves you and cares for you.
