Walk Of Life – Day 27, January 2023– Thoughts From The Book Of Psalms

Psalm 120 – Lying Lips Weakens, But The LORD Strengthens

This psalm is the first of a series of fifteen psalms each with the title, A Song of Ascents. ‘Ascent’ simply means a climb or walk to the summit of a mountain or hill. It is believed that pilgrims who went to Jerusalem for worship often sung these songs on their journey. Although the authors of most of these psalms are not mentioned, it is written with elegance, expressing strong sentiments towards the most exalted piety using few words.

The psalmist here seems to have relocated outside Israel and had experienced living with barbarous tribes of Meshech who flourished by engaging in slave trade (Ezekiel 27:13) and the nomadic tribes of Kedar of the Arabian deserts who were herdsmen. Even though the psalmist lived in peace with them, they were always hostile towards him. Trying to live according to God’s law among ungodly men who resorted to lies often made the psalmist feel weary of his life. When the time came for the psalmist to visit the temple of God which was customary for the Jews during the festive seasons, he sought peace and goodness among the godly people even though it was for a short period of time.

Often you might face certain discordance between yourself and your environment, it might be in your society, office, family members or brethren. The lies our soul needs deliverance from are not only lies about us but also from that has been said to us, about God when people manipulate his word for their benefits, about other people, about life, identity, purpose and happiness. However weary one might get, God can work good through you even among difficult company. It is a strive to live a righteous life in this wicked world, but the spirit of God which abides in you, as you grow feeding on the Word of God will give you grace, strength and deliverance from deceitful tongue.

God has commanded us to, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of themDeuteronomy 31:6. For, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:29-31
