Missing children: May 25 marks International Missing Children Day (2001)(NMCD in USA).
May 25 marks International Missing Children Day (2001)(NMCD in USA). President Reagan started this in 1983, following the disappearence of a 6 year old boy, Patz, in 1979.
Sombre Statistics shows, more than 8 lakhs children are missing every year, world around.
In India about 60000 are missing every year, i.e., about 180 per day. Nearly 60% are girls. More than half are untraced. Abduction, running away from unhappy homes, eloping, abuse, abandoned by families etc are the reasons attributed. The aims of the day are to place a spotlight on child abduction, educate parents with safeguarding measures, to honour the untraced and celebrate those who have.
