Walk Of Life – Day 05, October 2022 – Thoughts From The Book Of Psalms
Psalm 67
Psalm 67 is a very short psalm with 7 verses. The heading of the song is it is written to the chief Musician on Stringed Instruments. And the special heading given to this psalm is An Invocation and Doxology
Resources say that this wonderful psalm is sometimes forgotten or neglected when God’s people think of their favorite psalms. Though Martin Luther wrote five large volumes of exposition on Psalms, he skipped Psalm 67 entirely. Nevertheless, this psalm has a heart to see God’s way, God’s salvation, and God’s praise extended through all the earth.
God be merciful to us and bless us: These words come from the Aaronic Blessing of Numbers 6:24-26, where the High Priest of Israel would pronounce this beautiful blessing upon the people. The psalmist first knew his need for mercy. This sets our heart in the right frame of mind: sinners who need the mercy of God. One may need more mercy than another, but we all need mercy.
“The best saints and the worst sinners may unite in this petition.” (Spurgeon)
And bless us: Beyond the mercy of God – which He could show simply by leaving us alone, by not destroying us – we want God to bless us also. It would be quite a sight to see a guilty criminal before a judge, pleading for mercy, and receiving it – and then asking for a blessing! But God’s love toward us is that great.
And cause His face to shine upon us: To have the glorious, happy face of God shining upon us is the greatest gift we could have. To know that as God looks upon you, He is well pleased – not because of who you are, or what you have done, but because you are in Jesus Christ – there is no greater source of peace and power in life.
From verse 3 to 7 the psalmist overwhelmingly tells the Lord Himself “Let all the world praise you.” And he lists down certain reasons as follows.
1. For you shall judge the people righteously.
2. And govern the nations on earth.
3. The earth shall yield her increase.
There are many reasons that we have to worship Him and not just us who fear Him but the whole earth should praise Him and be filled with His knowledge as when it is done so the earth is going to increase her yield. Shall we pray for the same. That the whole earth should praise the Lord. Praises should be rendered from every tribe, every tongue and every people.
What a great joy that would be. Those who fear the Lord shall we all pray fro this cause tonight. There are many of our very close acquaintances, our relatives, our colleagues who have not known the Lord and they are rendering praises to objects. May our gracious Lord be merciful to them and make them sing their praises to the one and only living Lord Jesus Christ.
