Walk Of Life – Day 13, April 2023 – Thoughts From The Book Of Psalms

Psalm 146 – Trust In God For He Is Able

This psalm begins a series of five final songs known as Hallelujah Psalms in the Book of Psalms. The previous psalm, one can witness the people of God in their defeats and victories, their ups and downs in life, in rebellion, struggling faith, grief, shame, sin, doubt and fears through the psalms written by them. The psalmist now has put all this behind and ends the Book of Psalm with song of praise the LORD.

The psalmist here by his experience advises, Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save” , but only on God’s mighty hand. For one cannot be sure of his sincerity, ability or his continuance to be in a position to save for they are all sons of Adam, weak and mortal who having position of honor might not abide. But one can be sure of the Son of man, Jesus Christ in whom there is salvation and who will not fail those that trust in him not only for physical deliverance but also for spiritual deliverance.

The psalmist pens down what God can do for his people.

  • Protects his Creation – He made provisions even for them in the Law in Exodus 23:10-11,
“You shall sow your land for six years and gather in its yield, but on the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, so that the needy of your people may eat; and whatever they leave the beast of the field may eat. You are to do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove.
  • Protects from the Oppressed – In the courts where justice should be done, many times the guilty gets away and the cause of the innocent is lost. But the Lord is a faithful witness who see all things and will judge every ungodly acts and defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him and the innocent.
  • Feeds the Hungry – Psalm 34:10 says that the lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. Just as He feeds us in an ordinary way and sometimes in extraordinary way like feeding Elijah by ravens or multiplying food that was meant for one, He feeds our soul too with spiritual food from the Word of God.
  • Free from Captivity – God has the power to free his children from all kinds of bondage, whether it is bondage of slavery from men or from sin.
  • Free from Blindness – He can heal you from all kind of blindness, physical or spiritual one. Just as Lord Jesus could heal a man born blind, He can also open the spiritual eyes like the eyes of Elisha’s servant who panicked when an army of Aram came to captured them. But when God opened his eyes he could see the army of angels on the hill full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 2 Kings 6:17
  • Lift those who are Bowed Down – On spiritual terms, He lifts your spirit by taking all our burdens when we surrender completely to him and physically like in the case of the woman who was bend due to her infirmity. She was crippled by spirit for eighteen years but Lord Jesus could heal and she was straightened up. Luke 13: 11-13
  • Watches over Foreigner, Fatherless and Widows – God had made laws for the fatherless and the widow to be taken care of (Exodus 22:22, 23) and even for the alien (Leviticus 19:34) who would live with them so that they are not exploited.

Finally the psalmist ends by exalting God’s name, “The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.”
