Walk Of Life – Day 21, September 2022 – Thoughts From The Book Of Psalms

Psalm 59 – My God, My Fortress, My Merciful God, My Strength

This psalm is a Miktam of David addressed to the Chief Musicians set to the tune of “Do not destroy” written when King Saul sent men to keep watch the house David lived to kill him. But Michal his wife let him down the window and put an idol on the bed to make Saul’s men confuse it for David so that he could escape. The dangerous intent of King Saul was openly revealed, after which the long season of living as a fugitive began for David. 1 Samuel 19:11-18

David experienced God’s love in many ways during his long season of struggle for his life. Even when his own clan failed to give him refuge, God did not, who rescued him from all threats. During this period God prepared David by putting him through testing times so that he could be an efficient king for the people of Israel. God did not intent for him to fail like King Saul who disobeyed God but taught David that in every decision he needs to rely on God for it is He alone who can lift you up to a powerful position and can bring you down from it.

  • My God (Psalm59:1) – David acknowledges that Elohi Israel, the God of His chosen people is his God whom he has trusted from his childhood. He has seen the hand of Yahweh throughout his life and trusted that He alone can save him from the assassins send by King Saul for no just reasons. He prayed that God of Hosts, Elohim Sabaoth will send his angelic army to judge not only his enemies but also the nations, rendering to men according to their deeds.
  • My Defence (Psalm59:9,17) – David was watched by assassins who growled like dangerous dogs going all around the city to find and murder him. Their words against him were sharp as a sword with disregard for God or anyone with authority. So, David made his choice to go to God who is his fortress, a high place, out of the reach of his wicked enemies. It is in God he would take refuge to find rest for his troubled soul.
  • My Merciful God (Psalm59:10,17) – God was merciful to David as he was obedient to God. It is not that he was perfect and never made mistakes, but he certainly succeeded in finding mercy from God in all circumstances. That’s why God saved him from all dangers and prospered him to become a victorious King of Israel.
  • My Strength (Psalm59:9,17) – Knowing that the next many years will be challenging as he had become the most wanted fugitive in the country, he praised God and found strength in his promises. He did not let any dark fears cloud his judgements but waited for God’s appointed time.

If you are troubled and find that everything is going against you, know that God puts you through testing times for a reason. He wants you to grow in him and become an overcomer in your life. With the change of attitude in you, God can use you irrespective of your weakness and shortcomings. Through this psalm God wants you to know that He is your stronghold and He will not let you fail. So, take heart for still when you are a sinner, He has chosen to be your God.
