Walk of Life – Day 23 – July 2020 – Thoughts from the Book of Proverbs

Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. Proverbs 23:5

I used to have a friend in school who would always argue that money is everything. She would be like, if I am rich and I have all comforts, then there would be nothing that I need in this world and I would be truly happy. I remember arguing with her that money would not last forever and one day, all these earthly goods would vanish like a vapor and we would stand before the Lord empty, scared, and terrified.

Today, looking back I realize how true it is. Grateful that I realized early in life. Especially in the midst of a pandemic, even with all the money that we have, sometimes we are so helpless not knowing the consequences. There are so many things that money cannot buy and running behind riches is definitely a foolish thing. Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. It is a promise. Seek after eternal things, the Lord will definitely provide everything you need, surely not all that you want. He knows what is best.

A lot of people misunderstand this. It is not incorrect to have ambitions, to desire to have a good career, to excel in life, and to be in a good position or standing, remember Joseph and Daniel, they served in king’s courts. However, to trust in riches, to use money to get what you want, to ‘purchase’ college seats and job positions, is definitely and surely not something that the Lord would want you to do. It is sad that even today among believers, the practice of dowry exists. It may be very quiet and silent, but it is nevertheless there and trust me, the Lord would never approve of it, Never.

The riches that you are seeking after would put on eagle’s wings and fly as high as eagles fly, beyond sight! And you would truly wonder what you were running after. Rather store up treasure in heaven where neither moth nor rust can destroy. If you are actually ‘rich’ in terms of this world, quietly and silently, let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing, GIVE to those in need. It is so true that those whom you help may not help you in return but the Lord will richly reward every single labor of love. The Lord is no debtor of persons.

“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38 (ESV)

Prayer:

Lord, teach me not to trust in temporal things. Teach me to store up riches in heaven. Help me to be a channel of blessing to many and give cheerfully to those in need and for the extension of thy Kingdom. In Jesus Name, Amen.
