Walk Of Life – Day 23, October 2020 – Thoughts From The Book Of Proverbs
Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy; do not desire his delicacies – Proverbs 23:6
The book of Proverbs gives us many guidelines regarding dining etiquette say like when we sit before a king, we should be very much careful to eat. It also emphasizes to avoid over eating by keeping a knife to the throat. Alright, what is this verse talking about? It says not to eat the bread of a man who is stingy as he will ask you to eat only with his words but not whole heartedly.
These are all certain qualities which does not come in the list of “TO BE RECTIFIED” once after becoming a believer. Being stingy is not considered to be a sin. It is good to calculate and make your living but when it comes to give to others it should not be done with stinginess. When our Lord wanted to give food to all those who were listening to Him for a long time, He gave them in abundance. They were able to take twelve baskets full of remaining food.
Proverbs 22:9 says “he who has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor?
The Lord surely loves a liberal giver. Be generous in giving to others. Do it whole heartedly. Amy Carmichael has beautifully said “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.”
And when it come to food, it is the only source in this world to which someone can say “enough, I’m done.” To such, never be calculative. Our Lord shall surely reward you for your generosity. What a great shame will it be if people abide to this verse and refrain from eating before you just because your eyes are wicked.
Give and it will come back to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together. How much ever riches we accumulate we will not take anything along with us. Alexander the great, before he died told his people to keep his hands outside the coffin box just to show the world that he is not taking anything along with him.
Let us analyse about our generosity. Are we generous or are we stingy? Do people like to sit along with us and eat or they stay away from you just because you are very stingy?
May our Generous Lord help us to be generous.
