Walk Of Life – Day 29, November 2022 – Thoughts From The Book Of Psalms

Psalm 97 – The Lord Reigns

This psalm continues in the theme and tone of the previous psalms. Psalm 96 -98 each hails the Lord’s coming as the world’s king. While 95 and 96 soar with delight at what is in store for the world when Lord Jesus returns, in psalm 97 he emphasizes the frightening, awesome side of God’s kingly rule.

The psalmist is reminded of the power of God that his ancestors experienced in the wilderness. His presence filled the holy mountain with clouds and thick darkness warning the people of his unapproachable holiness while fire and lightnings revealed that He is consuming fire. Yet “by day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.” Exodus 13:21.

He let the whole nations know that it is LORD who reigns over all the earth and all the idols of this world are no match for him, when He delivered the Israelites by performing many miracles. Those who have trusted in the Lord will never be put to shame but those who fail to turn away from their wicked ways will be destroyed by his fierce anger.

The psalmist inspires the people to rejoice because the Lord reigns and He is in control of all that happens with his people. One might not understand his significant role is their lives but be assured that He constantly watches over you. He will not let his people perish on this earth, so He sent his son to save this generation from the evil one who rules this world. Amidst all the suffering one might face while living in this pilgrim land, you need to rejoice over your Creator for “He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.” Verse 10.

So, let us consider his greatness and his goodness to us and not fail to praise his holy name.
