Walk Of Life – Day 30, November 2022 – Thoughts From The Book Of Psalms

Psalm 99 – God Is Enthroned Between The Cherubim

Christian spiritual life comprises of apostle teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer as mentioned in Acts 2:42. Worship however is not mentioned here but it is like a letter which remain silent when pronounced but without which the word makes no sense. The guidelines of prayer given by Lord Jesus started with exalting God, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” Matthew 6: 9,10. Prayer for needs follows only after that. God seeks those who worship in spirit and truth.

This psalm encourages God’s children to worship the LORD who reigns. Worshiping God is not like thanking someone for the favors you receive or the help you get. True worship is possible only when you know your Maker personally for what He is. The psalmist says He is the one who sits enthroned on high surrounded by cherubim amid the fiery stones.  Ezekiel’s vision gives us a glimpse of God’s glory.

  • Foundation – The foundation of his throne is laid by four living creatures who have a body like a human, feet like a calf gleaming like burnished bronze, four wings and four hands and have four faces each that of a man, lion, ox and an eagle. Their wings were stretched out one toward the other with two wings covering its body. When the creatures moved, the wings sounded like the roar of rushing waters, like the voice of the Almighty, like the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings. There were wheels intersecting another wheel and their rims had eyes all around. They moved along with the living creatures who appeared like burning coals of fire or like torches.
  • Throne – Above them was what looked something like a vault, sparkling like crystal on which was a throne of a bright blue metamorphic rock where God is enthroned.
  • God – From his waist up He looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire and that from there down He looked like fire and brilliant light surrounded him. Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.

Though man cannot see God in his glory, He wanted his children who often went after foreign gods to know who He truly is. He revealed his glory to Ezekiel in a vision so that Israel can be assured that they truly serve the living God who is faithful to all his promises.

Man is exalted among creatures, the eagle is exalted among birds, the ox is exalted among domestic animals and the lion is exalted among wild beasts, yet they are all stationed below the chariot of the Holy One. Man might think in his heart that money and power will make him invincible not realizing that God is the mighty king who decides who should rise and who will fall. Through this psalm the psalmist is assuring us that we serve a Mighty King whom we should exalt at all times.
