Walk Of Life – Day 4, February 2022 – Thoughts From The Book Of Proverbs – Love!

Love Wisdom

Forsake Her Not, and She shall preserve thee; Love her and she shall keep thee. – Proverbs 4:6

The easy to read version Bible brings out the same passage and the following verse as simple as this “Love wisdom, and she will make you great. Hold on to wisdom, and she will bring you honor. Wisdom will reward you with a crown of honor and glory. Son, listen to me. Do what I say, and you will live a long time.”

What is this wisdom that we are talking about? Wisdom is a capacity of the mind that allows us to understand life from God’s perspective. Throughout the book of Proverbs, Solomon encourages us to “get wisdom” (Proverbs 4:5). He says those who get wisdom love life (see 19:8); that it’s better to get wisdom than gold (see 16:16); and that those who get wisdom find life and receive favor from the Lord (see 8:32 – 35).

Yet in Ecclesiastes 7:23–24 Solomon also makes clear that getting wisdom is a challenging process: “‘I am determined to be wise’ — but this was beyond me. Whatever exists is far off and most profound — who can discover it?”

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! (Romans 11:33)

Nobody can fathom them or thwart them.

For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:36)
Such is the wisdom the wise king Solomon talks about throughout His proverbs.

Proverbs 3:13, “Happy is the one who finds wisdom.” Biblical wisdom is not a dead-end street leading to a cul-de-sac of misery. It is the path to deep and lasting happiness.

Or consider Proverbs 24:13–14:

My son, eat honey, for it is good, and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste. Know that wisdom is such to your soul; if you find it, there will be a future [a honey-sweet future!],and your hope will not be cut off [honey-sweet forever].

If you find true wisdom, it will lead you infallibly to a happy future. And that future will last forever.

So Proverbs 19:8 says, “He who gets wisdom loves himself.” Not meaning: finds himself lovely, but embraces for himself a glorious future. Proverbs 8:32–36 sums it up beautifully. Here wisdom herself is speaking and she says,

And now, O sons, listen to me [wisdom]: blessed are those who keep my ways [the ways of wisdom]. . . . Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. For whoever finds me [finds wisdom] finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.

Therefore, as Proverbs 16:16 says, “To get wisdom is better than gold.” Why? Because gold can buy almost anything in this world. But it cannot buy everlasting life and joy.

Would you not start loving wisdom? How to love wisdom? Love God. Fear Him. Obey His commandments. Desire for more of Him. Read and meditate His word. Ask God for wisdom more than anything else. When you have wisdom you have everything. Apostle Paul was well educated and he had many qualifications but when he found the source of real wisdom he left everything or in other words he considered everything else has nothing.

Dear reader, shall we yearn for this wisdom above anything in this world? Shall we love this wisdom immensely?

Prayer: O God of wisdom, we are foolish people. Thank you Lord for choosing us. Fill us with your wisdom. Help us to love her more than anything. In the sweet and everlasting name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ we ask this prayer. Amen.
