Walk of Life – Day 4, September 2020, Thoughts from the Book of Proverbs

Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eye lids look straight before thee. – Proverbs 4:25

The importance of eyes is mentioned in Matthew 6:22 by Jesus Christ as “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light” The first organ that sinned in the garden of Eden is ‘The Eye’. When Satan showed our great grandmother the forbidden fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil before she could taste it was very much alluring to the eyes. It was the sense of vision that dominated within her and as the result she has set a record of being the first prominent person among the sinners.

If the root of any sin is analyzed in a profound way the origin of it will be only with the eyes. In culinary skills more than the preparation of food, presenting the plate plays a very pivotal role. Unless and until the prepared dish is garnished with the right proportion the guest who has ordered the food will not approve it.

A very popular online game that has been banned very recently offers virtual chicken dinner for which the players play throughout the day and night. That game has players without any difference of age or nationality.

Just the sight of crispy rolled masala dosa temps us to have one immediately. More than looking at the menu card to order what we want to eat that day, we look into the plate of others or the dish in the waiter’s hand and order for the exact thing.

Besides food even for the selection of the dress that we want to purchase, we tend to choose with the pictures of models wearing the same. Many have ruined their life because of many websites that they have been addicted with. Even before 10 years the eyes were not corrupted like now. Right from a tiny toddler to a well matured person the things that are watched and captured through the eyes is very much stinking.

Even believers or saints is not an exception. Satan for sure has his own way of locking every one in their own way.

How to escape? How to keep our eyes undefiled?

Jesus says in Matthew 5:29 “If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.” Will we be able to throw it away? Beware brothers and sisters with this sensory organ. Silently it creeps in and fades away the light of our body.

Psalmist says in Psalm 119:37 “Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.”

He also prays a very important prayer in the same psalm in verse 18 “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”

Let us seek the help of our Omnipotent and Omniscient God to make us utter with confidence like Job “If my step has turned aside from the way and my heart has gone after my eyes”. If Job could say boldly that he has never gone after his eyes we, the believers for whom the sinless blood of our saviour has been paid as a price have to say with much more confidence that our eyes are pure.

Knowing that The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good may our eyes be lightened and be straight always looking at Jesus, the Author and finisher of our faith.
