Walk of Life, Day-7 August 2020 – Thoughts from the Book of Proverbs

Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. Proverbs 7:2 (KJV)

God has given us the most important ten commandments which is later summed up into two greatest commandments: Firstly, to “Love the Lord with all your heart, mind and soul” and the second one, to “love your neighbour as yourself”. When we follow the commandments of God we live by faith which is just life, overflowing and abundant.

What is the Law?
The Law is any instruction given by God to enable us to be in His will. We can see a very long list of Moses’ Law in the Old Testament, which were the guidelines for the children of Israel to obey and walk in God’s ways.

How to keep the Law?
Here the verse says, keep my law as the apple of thine eye. “Apple of my eye” is an idiom which is used to mention that which is very precious to us. We take care of our children or our parents take care of us as an apple of our/their eyes, we protect them, defend them, safeguard them, help them, we take care of all their needs and value them so dearly as precious gifts of God. God is asking us to keep His law as the apple of our eye — very precious to us, and therefore, unless we love the laws of the Lord, we cannot do it. Ultimately, if we do not love the Lord we cannot value his commandments and the law.

In Psalm 119:34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. But how can we get understanding? The word of God clearly says in Job 28:28: “And the man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.”

Dear ones in Christ, never get tired of following the commandments of the Lord. How pleasant it is to love the Lord who loves us so much that He wants to instruct us and guide us as an apple of His eye. He wants us to treasure His word in the same way.

Discipline in life is always good, never murmur… follow the Lord’s instructions with all your heart because in the end it is for us to lead a holy life pleasing unto our master. Just like you will never allow anyone to touch the apple of your eye and preserve and protect everything that is very dear to you, may God’s Word be the most precious, most valuable jewel in our lives.
