Walk of Life – September 2021 – Day 27 – Thoughts from the Book of Proverbs – Step In
Step in to be Humble
Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. Proverbs 27:1 NIV
This is a very famous, commonly used proverb. It is said in the Bible that we are supposed to boast only in the Lord but we tend to forget that and feel proud and boast about every other thing. As God’s children we are not supposed to boast in our strength or in any other good things that we do except in the Lord, acknowledging His grace and mercies in accomplishing the task. All glory, honor, and praise belong to our God; we should examine our every action and our thought whether we are pleasing ourselves or we are pleasing the Lord. If we do any small little thing and we succeed in doing that, we feel great about ourselves, we take all the glory and the honor for ourselves, we forget that it is God who has helped us and start to boast about it.
God in His great mercy and grace has given us many good gifts and one great one among that is this life (breath), we forget that and talk or boast as if everything is our own. It is only by God’s grace we are alive and it is only by God’s grace, we are healthy, our time and talents belong to God. Jacob’s prayer to God is so appealing “I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.” Genesis 32:10 We are bound to give glory to God in whatever we get or do whether we eat, sit, or stand…in everything, glory belongs to God. Many times we forget this and try to steal the glory of God. Sometimes pride enters a believer’s heart unawares, pride in his own works, pride in being righteous, or pride in doing good things which are not acceptable in the sight of God. Do you know why the Lord killed 70,000 people of David’s army? David wanted to boast in his army and his strength forgetting that it is the Lord who helped and not his army.
Dear friends, let us examine ourselves not to boast in any of our works or in anything that we possess, as it depicts pride. Let us be mindful of God and all his provisions including this precious life. I am what I am by the grace of God will never forget that whatever we have in life, our family, our blessings, job, health, wealth, talents, wisdom, teachers, or godly fellowship is all by the abundant grace of God. Let us not boast of tomorrow or plan against God’s will. Because we do not know what happens the next minute, the entire universe and the creation is in the sovereign hands of God like Jacob, let us say am unworthy to obtain the least of your mercies Lord!
“You will never exaggerate when you speak good things of God. It is not possible to do so. Try, dear brethren, and boast in the Lord.” Charles Spurgeon
“Ministers are powerless people who have nothing to boast of except their weaknesses. But when the Lord whom they serve fills them with His blessing they will move mountains and change the hearts of people wherever they go.” Henri Nouwen
