Ye are the SALT | Ye are the LIGHT

Matthew 5:13-14

Matthew 5:3-11 – these verses start with the phrase, “Blessed are ..“, in order to receive the blessing we have to do that which is mentioned in the second part of these verses.

In the first 12 verses, Jesus is exhorting to do something in order to be blessed.

In verses, 13 & 14, Jesus is not telling us to do something but showing us what we already have within us, “Ye are the salt“, “Ye are the light“.

Often we take the begging bowl and go on shopping in prayers.

But Jesus indirectly telling us, what is already there within us.

SALT & LIGHT are exactly opposite.

Salt is HIDDEN but gives flavor whereas Light can’t be hidden but VISIBLE.

Qualities of SALT

  1. Preserving ability – A Christian should work like a preservative in this world
  2. Penetrating ability – A Christian should penetrate with the Gospel of Jesus Christ
  3. Purifying ability – A Christian should have a purifying effect on the world around him
  4. Pleasing ability – A Christian should add flavor to the world around him
  5. Poisoning ability – A Christian should be a pure poison to the sin around him
  6. Promoting ability – A Christian should promote thirst about Lord Jesus Christ
  7. Proven ability – A Christian living in this world is the proof that the world is still not destroyed

Jesus says in John 9:5, “as long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world“.

Now Jesus is in heaven with the Father, as long as we live in this world, Jesus says in Matt 5:14, “Ye are the light of the world“.

Qualities of LIGHT

  2. Light DividesLight & darkness cannot abide together
  3. Light DirectsLight shows the path

Bring out the qualities of salt & light which already exist within you.

Otherwise, Matt 5:13 says, – “… it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”

Let’s not crib for what we don’t have by always making a peer comparison but let’s understand what we already have within us, abilities of Salt & Light, Bring out !!!
