June 21 – Flying like Eagles
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isa 40:31)
The eagles are majestic birds, seven foot wing spans, orange beaks, white heads, shining feathers…one of God’s most priced creations. The Bible says by waiting on the Lord, trusting in Him and deriving our strength from him we will mount up on wings as eagles…
What is so special about eagles, I’ve always wondered. When eagles fly, they do not actually flap their wings, they just beautifully glide along with the air currents. It is an awe-inspiring sight…these majestic birds almost floating in the air at enormous heights.
And how do they learn to fly?
The eagle normally builds its nest in the peak of a high mountain or on the top of a tall tree. The nest is made with much skill and is a highly cozy place for the eagle. Suddenly once Mama Eagle feels her little eaglets are ready to fly, she comes home and begins tearing the nest. Imagine the shock of those tiny eaglets and then she does the next strange thing…she pushes one of those eaglets off the cliff of the rock or the top of the tree. The eaglet tries hard to flap his wings and then mama dives down, swoops below the eaglet and safely takes the baby eaglet back. Before the eaglet realizes what is happening, she again turns upside down and knocks the little eaglet again. The eaglet again flaps helplessly only to be lifted again and then dropped. It takes six to seven drops before the eaglet learns that flying is not just vigorously flapping its wings…it is by gliding with the air currents just like mama eagle.
It is the same in life…the Lord deals with us similarly. Each drop may feel so hurting but the Lord is teaching us to fly…not by energetically flapping wings and trying to solve things ourselves but by wholly depending and trusting on Him. By leaning on the everlasting arms, trusting the currents of His love, allowing Him to guide you step by step and thus flying to where He wants you to be.
Prayer: Dear Lord, teach me to whole heartedly trust you and depend on you without making my own efforts. Let me completely trust in thy love, thy provisions and believe that with you I can soar to any height far above any storm, any worldly distraction and relax and enjoy thy presence and love.
