Prophet Elijah: The Still Small Voice – I Kings 19

Learn to hear God’s voice. It will stand you in good stead. We can hear God’s voice by reading our Bible regularly and asking Him to speak to us. Then God will make his voice to be heard in your mind.
This article is the third in the series on Elijah

Memory Verse: I Kings 19:11,12

Elijah had a great victory at Mount Carmel. It was such a miraculous incident and the people were all amazed when they saw fire come down from heaven. But in the next chapter, something strange happens. Ahab informs Jezebel how Elijah had murdered the prophets of the other gods and Jezebel sends word to Elijah that she would kill him. Instead of safely trusting in the Lord as he always did, Elijah ran, ran for his life. He came to a tree, sat under its shade and told the Lord, “I have had enough, I do not want to live… please take my life.”

Lord never gives up on us

We may get discouraged, upset, disappointed, and give up, but the Lord never gives up on us. He loves us more than we know and he loved Elijah. An angel came to Elijah and told him, rise and eat. There was bread baked on coals and water. Elijah ate and slept again, and the next time, the angel again woke him and provided him food. Then he arose and went to Horeb, the mountain of God 40 days and nights in that strength and hid in a cave.

The Lord now asks him, what are you doing here Elijah? He says Lord, I have been very zealous for you but the Israelites have forsaken you, they have killed many prophets and now they want to kill me also. Then the Lord said Elijah go stand in the mountain and the Lord will pass by. Elijah was very angry probably that the Lord did not judge Israel.

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” -1 Kings 11-13

That gentle whisper of God

You notice that Elijah expected God to be in the great powerful wind, or in the earthquake but the Lord revealed himself to Elijah in a gentle whisper. Many a times we expect God to act differently but he appears in the simplest of ways. He asks Elijah what are you doing here. And Elijah repeats the same answer. The Lord commands him on what to do next and also to anoint Elisha as a prophet in his place.

Have you felt bad, discouraged, frustrated over so many things happening in your life. Do you want God to act differently? He knows what is best for you and he leads in the perfect path always. Learn to hear his still small voice. Read your Bible and pray every day and you will hear Him speaking to you and He will guide you in the way that you should go.
